Descrizione Opera / Biografia

Woman Portrait is an attempt to reflect upon women photographic representation by underlining the contrast created by the evocative power of symbols and the truthfulness of photography, through its ability to faithfully reproduce reality. The project combines the archetypal symbols of femininity with titles of photographic women portraits dating back to the late 1800s, early ’900, when photography was at its early stages. The title assigned to each photo, appropriated from existing images and yet from them released, it helps to define the object photographed and to identify it as a person. The items, utilized as symbols, have been chosen among emblems which for centuries described woman archetypal properties (the onion as a labyrinth, the seeds as fertility, etc.). The juxtaposition of symbols, which are connotative, allusive, poetic and evocative elements of the language, with photography as a truthful mean to portray them, aims to emphasize the interpretative and subjective aspects of the photographic portrait.
----
Dafne Salis is a photographer and an artist. Utilizing the photographic tool to explore the notion of identity and its photographic representation, she focuses her conceptual research on feminine genre and geographical sense of belongings. By mixing past and present, fiction and reality, archival material with contemporary pictures, her images try to explicit the semiotic aspects and to unveil the syntax of photographic language. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Photography at the London College of Communication in 2012, Salis has been working since then in the visual art field. Her work has been recognized with awards and featured in several exhibitions including ‘My Paradise’ show at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACRO) in Rome and ’The Third Factor’ at the Sassoon Gallery in London. She also works in a duo with Martha Gut; together they won an art residency in Toffia, IT, whose work will be presented within a feminist exhibition,in London next October. She lives and works between London and Rome.
