Artwork description / Biography
I walk down a street, through an airport, or by the sea, my thoughts both directed and distracted as much by memory, the demands of the day or considerations of the future, as by momentary experiences as I move through space and time. My art represents a filtering and ordering of the structures I inhabit, the objects and images I absorb, the books I read and the people I pass: people who are also absorbed in their own languages, thoughts and environments. My images attempt to encompass internal and external worlds and the movement between the two.
These paintings are constructed landscapes that reference specific places and people I know, as well as those I have no more to do with than to pass in the street. The paintings are imaginary, psychological and representational constructions of space and experience.
I have shown my work in galleries in Vancouver, Philadelphia and Houston and spent ten years teaching painting and drawing at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia until moving to Johannesburg, South Africa in 2013. I now live and work in both Johannesburg for 8 months of the year and in Lovran, Croatia for 4 months of the year.
