Premio Combat Prize

The ”synapsis” which I describe is not just a permanent procedure of ’metamorphosis’ that I was able to create at a plastic material by applying high temperature on it. It can also be considered as a procedure during which two elements create a network after their close approach. The plastic surface was gradually losing its transparency creating a picture of ”neurons” . Just about before ” neurons” were starting to melt and be reformed into fragments, I recorded their new shapes which symbolically correspond to the plasticity of memory and brain reflections. The whole scene is a parallel symbolism of the brain neuron synapses which participate in the creation and maintenance of memory. I refer to ” memories”,which are a unique phenomenon for every human being, not only as a picture but as a complicated magical structure. The thought that people suffer of memory loss made clear to me that by losing our memories we lose our personality as well as our personal history.
Η Συναψη που περιγράφω δεν είναι μονο μια διαδικασία μόνιμης παραμόρφωσης που προκάλεσα σε ένα πλαστικό υλικό κατά την επίδραση της θερμότητας, αλλά μια διαδικασία κατα την οποία δυο στοιχεία έρχονται το ένα κοντά στο άλλο, δημιουργώντας ένα δίκτυο. Η πλαστική επιφάνεια σιγά σιγά έχανε την διαφάνεια της, δημιουργώντας “νευρώνες”. Λίγο πριν αυτοί λιώσουν και αποχωριστούν τα τμήματά τους, κατέγραψα όλες αυτες τις νέες φόρμες και αποτελούν την ευπλαστότητα της μνημης και της ανάκλησης. Το σκηνικό που δημιουργείται είναι αναφορά στις νευρικές συνάψεις που είναι υπεύθυνες για την δημιουργία και διατήρηση της μνήμης στον άνθρωπο. Σαν αναφορά λοιπόν στις μνήμες που κάθε ένας απο μάς έχει, θέλω να παρουσιάσω την ανθρώπινη φύση όχι ως εικόνα, αλλά ως ένα πολύπλοκο, μαγικό οικοδόμημα. Η σκέψη οτι συνάνθρωποι βασανίζονται απο απώλεια μνήμης, με οδήγησε στο συμπέρασμα πως χάνοντας την μνήμη μας, χάνουμε την προσωπικότητά μας, αλλά και την προσωπική μας ιστορία.
Visual Artist Savvas Mavidis was born in Athens in 1978. He studied Laboratory Medicine and has been working in a General Hospital since 2009. The same year he was accepted in Athens School of Fine Arts. Graduated in 2014.He is attending the MSc Waste Management. Physical environment and pollution, in Open University of Greece.
