Premio Combat Prize

Artwork description:
I understand landscape as a type of image that is connected to notions of nature, idyll, the exotic and the romantic. I try to work with these elements mixing them fluently on the one hand and discerning them sharply at other times. My landscape paintings comprise representations of world famous touristic places and natural attractions, which by means of the real geographical reference evoke a thoroughly ambivalent sensation in the viewer: I want to achieve a kind of paradox - the more familiar these places seem to us in the image, the more generic and even inapproachable I want my paintings to be. I don’t want to show any specific place, as which these images are deceivingly presented to us daily in photographical representations. I aim to show places of desire that speak to us in society via their constant medial presence.
I use airbrush technique to paint. This enables me to distance painting from the canvas and approach a disembodied digital aesthetic. In this series I had the feeling I was working in an almost sculptural manner with the fine particles of paint. I tried to arrange a mist of color to make the paintings shimmer and integrate the viewer directly on a retinal level
