Artwork description / Biography

Ocean is a plastic bag handle construction to depict the movement of corals and seagrasses on the sea floor. It is also a comment on the effect of plastic bags in our marine environment.
Jennifer Baird Bio.
After training in textile design at the University of Technology, Sydney I became an artist almost by accident. I started the Bondi Markets in 1994 and so began my journey as an artist. My first range of work was small pastel drawings, I still remember my first sale it was a little drawing of a boy holding a surfboard for $5. All the encouragement I needed to keep going.
I have exibited in group and solo shows, 2016 saw my first international group show at the Brick Lane Gallery in London. My work has developed from little drawings to gouache paintings on A2 paper, lino prints and canvas.
Recently I have explored oil painting and work with recycled objects. My subject matter includes local images of Canberra, south coast beaches and some Sydney scenes. I am available for commissions, examples of these include wedding invitations and gifts, book covers, people’s houses and special holiday destinations, a few (very rare) portraits and recently a lino print for the makers of the Boundless playground in Canberra.
In 2016 I was the joint winner of the inaugural Sheridan Evans Art Award for artwork relating to ocean pools for my lino print ‘Pools of Sydney’.
