Descrizione Opera / Biografia
This drawing is part of a series all made with the same materials (charcoal on paper) and dimensions (150 x 100 cms). I often use charcoal because it’s a very direct material with a wide variety of possible mark makings. I can very quickly do a thick full dark line as well as a very thin grey line. It’s a material I’ve been using since my art school days. My intention is to drive the material to its full potential while being subjected to my plastic ideas. I don’t work directly from images, I create with a spontaneous attitude, building an abstract/figurative narrative to be discovered in the surface. To create a sense of purpose and vitality, movement is an almost essential part of my process, destroying, gathering, distorting, etc , the various elements I create.
I studied fine arts at Ar.Co school in Lisbon from 2008 to 2013. After finishing school I went to live in Paris where I discovered and indulged in many art exhibitions that helped to create my visual acuity. I returned to Lisbon two years after and soon started to exhibit. In the beginning of 2016 I was selected to participate at the 66th edition of Jeune création at the Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris and after that I had my first solo show in Lisbon, at Alecrim 50 gallery. It was a year where my career really started and after some collective exhibitions i finished the year with another solo exhibition at Espace Pilote in Paris. In the beginning of 2017 I was one of the winners of the FID prize.
