Tanya Morand observes and photographs the neighborhoods and parks that mark her paths of transit on foot or bicycle. This bank of images then nourishes her projects investigating the theme of the changing and multiple aspect of places, using painting, drawing and print-making. With her recent works, this mixing of places and architecture serves to explore the increasingly transitory character of cities, and to imply not only a local memory but also a cosmopolitan memory that permeates the urban fabric. Intending to evoke porosity between what is human and spatial or architectural, Morand creates images that resonate with multiple experiences, contrasting the monumental and vernacular, the sublime and strange, and the opulent and abandoned.
Her latest project, "Passages:
parks, squares and promenades" is inspired by the current movement in city planning aimed at making cities greener and more pedestrian/bike friendly. This series of paintings and drawings shows how parks, public squares and promenades generate cracks that let green and light enter the urban environment. The paintings are composed in a way that they reveal another place behind the layer of a first place as seen through cracks, arabesques and sometimes even botanical motifs.
