Descrizione Opera / Biografia

Artist`s statement
At a certain moment in my printmaking career I developed the impression that
in times of highly sophisticated methods of re-production simply making “copies” can no longer be the main aim of printmaking, in my case the technique of woodblock printing. Instead I started mainly doing originals only (rarely I still do editions); that is to say that I start off with a certain number of blocks, which I then re-work in the course of the printing-process.
I combine them with each other, I introduce new blocks, thereby change the material used for printing in various ways, and so in the end create series of similar, related but never identical prints. The end product then is the series as such, not an edition of one of the prints of the series.
One print derives from its predecessor and at the same time functions as a link to the next one. In that way a certain motif doesn`t remain static but can be shown in progress, a theme is presented in numerous variations. This shows that things are in movement, in constant change. Nothing remains as it seems at first sight. Nothing has got only one aspect, only one perspective to look at it. Everything is complex, has to be presented from different angles. Thus also in that view an old technique and contemporary ideas and concepts mingle in one. Everything is joined together, everything is in progress, everything is many-sided.
In this way printmaking gains a new dimension: the aim is not reproduction but the aim is to produce works that cannot be done in any other technique; the fact that the works could be reproduced in a certain number of copies is only secondary (if at all).
Originality is more important than edition. In times when everything can be reproduced, replaced, when people become more and more copies of (sometimes only imaginary) idols, in times when people have more and more only virtual “social” contacts, in times when people more and more fulfil (willingly or forcedly) role models that are made up by unidentifiable mass phenomena, in such time originality becomes a value of high importance. So even in printmaking one cannot disregard the tension between edition and originality.
On the other hand working in series (of originals) mirrors modern world where people are – due to modern means of communication – constantly connected to the rest of the world (whether they want or not!). People are individuals, but people are at the same time under the influence of others, are part of a bigger community, part of networks, more so than ever before. So again a series is a reflection of modern way of life.
