Descrizione Opera / Biografia

.deformingChief began as a series of observations regarding the heritage object from my hometown village in Batang Buo, Indonesia. The house is the symbol of local identity and ethnicity from my traditional tribe ‘Minangkabau’. This ethnic group is known for its dynamic ethnic culture where the concept of ’travel’ or we called it ’rantau’. Through the activity of ‘merantau’, the people including myself bring their culture and tradition to their new land.
Within the digital graphic symbolic of this series, I am exploring the visual narrative in hyper-reality and the interrelationship between the virtual and physical world, each series represent a different symbolic representation, and each image was transformed into digital graphics. The meaning of travelling into two-dimension with a contradiction of feeling through 3D augmented into photography creates a second layer of imagination.
The work is a reflection on the role of technology in mediating an event that often creates distance and biases in perception as it relates to an image and also at the same time delivers a new way of communication. Exploring how people could learn through the image materials presented online and offline also the representation uses a sign whereby items stand-in for or represent another.
Biography:
Born and raised in Indonesia and now living in Venice, Italy meanwhile doing my doctoral studies in digital heritage, I have been working as an assistant curator for the National Pavilion of Indonesia for Venice Biennale Art and Architecture 2017- 2019 and also at the Foundation of La Biennale di Venezia itself. Receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship 2018 and European Cultural Centre. I had an interdisciplinary background in informatics and performing arts, very much driven by exploring human connections with a place, memories, and history with the objective of interpreting digital technology and virtual forms through heritage taken from historical archives, ephemera and daily life. This year, I am awarded as the finalist in the international competition Arte Laguna 16 2021/2022, CICA Museum of Contemporary Art 2022, Gimpo – South Korea and History Festival 2018 Maxim Gorki Theatre - Berlin.
