Jesslyn is a portrait of an imaginary woman in the series “Relevant Fictions” - a series of works hinting at blurred binaries between fact and fiction, between the general and the particular.
Jesslyn seems to exist in a different universe - she is profoundly solitary, an enigma to the world around her, and inhabits a spiritual moment in which her peculiar desires become omens of cultural transition. She leaves the viewer to meditate on who she is and what is happening to her.
Nancy Jo Ward creates unique and stylistically sophisticated work through innovation, experimentation, hybridization of forms, and techniques that mix past and present and contaminate the contemporary with tradition. Her practice embraces a range of digital and analog mediums used to explore the aesthetics of post-internet culture in the pursuit of engagement with various media.
She creates imaginary portraits using various methods to paint, mix, and manipulate. Her art is purely figurative and results from decontextualized digital images, combined and reconstructed under the impulses of creativity, directed by personal narratives and mathematically determined through artificial intelligence and algorithms. Nancy Jo’s sensibilities as a designer continue to be evident through references to graffiti, current events, and pop culture. These investigations have led to unpredictable discoveries as she explores the edges of beauty.
