My works are a result of the moment, when on the end of the day the believe in the controllability of processes perishes and fatigue takes over. When the body with its experience of the world remains, with its engravings of the attempts to understand. Scooping out of the emptiness after the end of any certitude and observing what happens, if one spreads colour on paper with no intention: Which invisible path does the arm follow? What arises?
On 28th of Mai 2020 this one showed up within a few minutes. It left me with a spooky feeling.
The actual apocalyptic event, the nuclear explosion accompanied by a skull, takes place in the lower third, in the underground, sharply separated from the top. It dominates the picture without spreading out. It is contrasted by the almost complete emptiness in the upper part of the picture, in which the same colours emerge like islands from the sea. A forest-like structure on the right-hand edge of the picture recalls familiar things and reinforces the effect of an implied landscape. If we focus on the perception of a landscape, the figure of the mushroom cloud turns into an arched bridge with a view into the distance and the skull is isolated as a pictorial element, no longer in terms of colour alone. At the same time, an unresolvable irritation arises because a blue sky under the bridge creates spatial depth, but this is not continued above. Here the effect of space is created exclusively by the three island-like pictorial elements.
The picture can be read both as man’s devastation of the earth and as a symbol of a largely unconscious psychological process that is essentially fragmentary.
Bio
Born in 1966 in Austria, I studied landscape ecology and work in nature conservation and sustainable development. Life-long I attended lectures in Humanities, including history of arts, at Viennese universities, but I started painting only late in life (2019). I attended painting and drawing courses by Haider Al-Zubaidi and Udo Hohenberger.
