I am Carlos Velasquez, an artist from Colombia based in Sydney, Australia from 2018; I have been showing my work in Colombia, USA, and Australia. My artistic practice involves experiments with drawing, video, and photography. For me, art consists of contemplating how ideas originate from the subconscious and how they can evolve into shared experiences while maintaining a personal and indescribable quality where perception becomes the core of my work and practice being our natural instrument for translating the phenomena around us or inside us. For me, as an artist, it is essential to create a space for the audience to contemplate the artwork as something that brings the opportunity to think about what we are perceiving, how it affects us, and the relations that can be made between the artwork and every individual who is contemplating it.
This drawing is part of a project called Absurd Behaviour that is focused on repeatedly performing the same action on paper; it embodies creation in the act of drawing and aims to develop a methodology for one drawing based on two rules: maintaining the same pattern consistently and pushing it to the extreme. For this drawing, I used asterisks to create a shape, experimenting with the form of a single square. The primary idea is to allow the image to emerge without any preconceptions, embracing a spirit of adventure. The main intention is to discover, through the process, all the possibilities of the drawing and to see how organically the image arises from the unconscious and becomes manifest on the paper, inviting the observer to contemplate and interpret it.
