Location: Museum of the City of Livorno - Cultural Center of Bottini dell’Olio

The contemporary wing of the Museum of the City of Livorno – Bottini dell’Olio Cultural Hub houses the civic collection, comprising over one hundred works from 1945 to the present, further enriched over time by acquisitions linked to the Modigliani Prize. Within the evocative spaces of the Church of the Luogo Pio, the artistic research of Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, and Mario Nigro enters into dialogue with the gestural intensity of Emilio Vedova, the conceptual visions of Emilio Isgrò and Gianfranco Baruchello, the sculptures of Arnaldo Pomodoro, and the striking Grande rettile by Pino Pascali. A concise yet powerful exhibition route that narrates the identity of Livorno through the most authoritative voices of contemporary Italian art, confirming the city’s enduring vocation for experimentation.

MUSEUM Giovanni Fattori

The home of the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum in Livorno is Villa Mimbelli, a 19th-century private residence named after the family who had been living there until the 1930s. The museum moved to this location in 1994 but its origins date back to the end of the 19th century when the Municipal Authorities decided to bring together the heritage that had been scattered throughout the local area in a single venue and to open it to visitors. Since then, various historical buildings have housed the museum before Villa Mimbelli.

Basically, the G. Fattori Museum collection is a Leghorn and Tuscan art collection, which spans from the mid-19th century to the early decades of the 20th. Its central nucleus consists of the work of Giovanni Fattori and few other exponents of the Macchiaioli school, as well as those of a larger group of artists who are generally referred to as “Post–Macchiaioli”.

location
The historical inclination of the city towards contemporary art led, in 1974, to the birth of the Progressive Museum of Contemporary Art. Although the Museum concluded its activity at the end of the 80s, it made the city live a crucial moment since the avant-garde trends that animated the whole Italian artistic panorama of the 70s flowed into Leghorn. This rich collection - which includes works by internationally renowned artists among whom Burri, Castellani, Manzoni, Fontana and Pascali, - is now part of the heritage of the Musei civici di Livorno that, thanks to initiatives such as the award “Fattori Contemporaneo”, works in favor of the enhancement and the promotion of contemporary art.
