Descrizione Opera / Biografia

Illusions is a series based on the distortion of objects creating new shapes and forms in order to question the relationship between body-space-object. The colour white has been a significant aspect of Fafaliou’s work as it refers to the neutrality beyond the materiality and individuality of the object.
With simple minimal shapes, the artist frames the movement to her sculptures giving them an abstract identity.
Inspired by the notion of memory and visual perception she is experimenting with a variety of materials including metal wire, creating a distorted memory of commonplace objects, places and people. This installation gives space to the absent, to the non anymore existent that we still carry with us. It’s a debate between the physical presence and the void. The shadows of the once existed objects of matter become the focus of attention, revealing the space they hold in our spatial existence.
The work is about experiencing visually & physically the “other” and how we perceive, process and record our immediate environment. The distortion –the “shadows” of commonplace objects, materials and forms –of what it was once known, creates new dialogues between them and the viewer, observing the disruption of familiarity to them.
Her work Illusions refers to the physicality and ephemerality of the material creating a dialogue between the space, the object and the viewer. The manipulation of the object leading it to its final form shows the mutually shaping process of human identity and urban space.
--Biography / Artist Statement--
Anna Fafaliou is a London based conceptual and visual artist.
Fascinated by the Color Theory and the relationship between the color white and memory, I create imaginary environments questioning the visual & physical ways of experiencing materiality and how we perceive, process and record our immediate environment. My practice is based on the distortion of commonplace objects, materials and forms in order to create new dialogues between them and the viewer, observing the disruption of familiarity to them. Living in a consumer society, we tend to justify ourselves through our belongings; thus we associate our emotions and memories with materials and objects. My work focuses on the fluidity and instability of our visual perception and memory in relation to the physical presence, and how spatial relationships can be disrupted and are open to interpretation. Inspired by the notion of memory, identity & visual perception I create installations & performances exploring the relationship between object, memory and space. The play between reality & abstraction stands at the forefront of my projects.
