Descrizione Opera / Biografia
Nocturne is an audiovisual poem of the difficulties and uncertainty of connection between others. The film captures the attention of the viewer by immersing it into a painterly visual that resembles the work of Turner but more likely the post-impressionism artist James Whistler, who believed in the statement of ”Art for art’s sake” Art that is self-motivated and detached from any utilitarian function. The title is also taken and inspired by his series ”Nocturnes”
The video was captured with a Canon Mark III at night. A swan swimming alone captured my attention while I was working on another film. As I begin to film it I started to use a flashlight with different settings such as the S.O.S. blinking setting. The light gave the swan an interesting glitchy look on the video file that was later processed on After Effects. By multiplying the movements with an echo effect separated by a few decimals of a second I was able to create an interesting effect that played well with the reflection of the swan itself. Lastly, another layer of remapped time was added to give the illusion of a second swan that disappears while making contact with the previous one.
”Art should be independent of all claptrap – should stand alone [...] and appeal to the artistic sense of eye or ear, without confounding this with emotions entirely foreign to it, as devotion, pity, love, patriotism and the like.”
