Artwork description:
My first encounter with China had a strong impact on my work.
I had assumed that I would continue working in the familiar and traditional media of oil on canvas, but soon realized that I had to deal with all the new impressions in a more flexible manner.
Ink and paper were the media at hand and allowed me the necessary freedom of expression. The first paintings were “drawn” out of me by the ease and flow of the brush on paper and the need to react emotionally, from a need to express myself quickly, to react spontaneously to the wealth of impressions I had encountered and the simple availability of paper and ink.
In the second phase, I started to fuse these fast ink-paintings with my traditional technique of oils.
“LINE&POINT Oil 1” was the first of a series of four to emerge.
Light can not be created without the presence of darkness; it displaces darkness and it is swallowed by it simultaneously. This eternal interleaving and conditioning of darkness and light in movement, to trace this simultaneity and contraryness, to follow it and to visualize it, is the topic of these works.
