Descrizione Opera / Biografia

This body of work is the latest in a continuing exploration around the theme of perception. The resin sculptures are part of a series titled The Flesh of the World, where the displaced rock casts have become almost body-like, zoomorphic reformations that take on living qualities, transcending their geological origins. They are cave-like voids suggestive of internal and intimate body spaces: flesh or growing matter, searching out new life.
This work subtly investigates the essence of things we perceive: the physical world, nature and our place within it. It seeks to understand the sublime qualities of a mountain and more specifically rock: physically as the very earth that supports us and geologically as the almost ageless constant that resonates through time, giving perspective to our lives on this planet.
I am interested with the interconnectedness between the human and the non-human, what passes and what outlasts. The work is about deconstructing wholeness in order to give something more than wholeness, not just a surface reading but also an understanding of the rock’s interior, our interior, the hidden depth of things. It is a silent communication between the rock and the body in an attempt to better understand the self.
