The first book I read in childhood was ”The Amphibian Man” by Alexander Belyaev. It is about Argentinean scientist and a maverick surgeon, who gives his son, named Ichthyander a life-saving transplant - a set of shark gills. Due to this translplant he has to spend most of his time under water. Successful experiment indeed, at the same time limits the young man’s ability to interact with the world outside of ocean environment.
The book investigates the possibilities of physical survival under extreme conditions, as well as the moral integrity of scientific experiments. However, I was more interested to get to know the person caught between two worlds. And although both of these worlds are accessible to him, he can not live to the fullest in any of them, and consequently is doomed to loneliness.
