A minimalistic picture. Untitled. – No comment on one of the pressing issues of our time? Or perhaps it is? A risky undertaking to show up with that. So why?
In recent months in particular, we all have experienced how little we can rely on our assumptions about the world. What should you do if thinking no longer provides reliable answers and AI responses are interwoven with hallucinations?
Our situation increasingly reminds me of that of René Descartes – then the fact of our physicality becomes important again. This is where my artistic work comes in: it is a response to the ‘crisis of resonance experience’ (Hartmut Rosa) as the underlying current of our time.
I paint, therefore I am!
This image exemplifies the qualities of a primal scene of resonance, of beginning and encounter:
In the beginning there is the tabula rasa. The whiteness of the paper thus plays a key role. It is the venue.
The primal energy at the beginning is intense. It knows no inhibitions. It is breakthrough energy. The image therefore thrives on contrasts of all kinds.
What is happening here? A broad stroke enters the picture from the right, while a much smaller element flies towards it from the left, balancing it out: Will they crash into each other? Is it a friendly approach? And from above, a lightning-like energy intervenes. It seems to ride on the first element – or carry it?
These massive interventions are accompanied by very delicate elements that take the harshness out of the action, giving it a touch of playfulness and lightness.
At first glance, the picture may appear almost black and white, but when you look at it for longer, the colours begin to glow more and more from within: Life makes itself heard.
Bio
Born in 1966 in Austria, I studied landscape ecology and work in nature conservation and sustainable development. Life-long I attended lectures in Humanities, including history of arts, at Viennese universities, but I started painting only late in life (2019). I attended painting and drawing courses by Haider Al-Zubaidi and Udo Hohenberger.
