Descrizione Opera / Biografia

The edge of knowledge is a paradox - What we know shapes us, yet what remains unknown defines us. A space where curiosity and mystery meet.
cold worked, layered, UV-glued, ground, polished, sandblasted
I work with found wood or stone and cold-processed float glass. The strong contrast
between the organic, transient materials and the clear, glossy presence of glass
creates a tension that fascinates and drives me. The question of how opposites can
merge into something new continually pushes me to explore boundaries. The slow
process, the vision that arises when discovering a piece, and the curiosity of whether
it can be realized become a daily mission that draws me into the studio.
My work revolves around balance in opposites – between materials, energies, the
past and the new, life and death. What is lifeless, shaped by nature, is not hidden but
honored, forming the foundation for something radiant and new. I want viewers to be
amazed and to feel an inner movement – a reminder that all living things emerge
from a balance of opposites.
I work cold with float glass – cutting, layering, and sanding it on vintage machines
with water cooling. Through grinding, layering, and polishing, the material is
simultaneously reduced and built up – a metaphor for continuously working on
oneself until something harmonious and complete emerges.
The work comes alive through light and perspective; each viewpoint reveals new
aspects. The sculpture becomes autonomous – a presence in space that breathes
and invites the viewer to see themselves reflected.
Bio
Peter Wiechenthaler
Born in [1984] in Saalfelden, Austria
Resides and works in Bressanone, Italy
Peter Wiechenthaler, born in 1984 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, Austria, is an artist specializing in cold glass
processing, currently residing in Brixen, Italy, in the Dolomites region. His contemporary works reflect a natural growth
process, merging elements of nature with glass to create pieces that honor the old while transforming it into something new,
profound, and authentic. His sculptures, built pane by pane, grow organically, embodying a unique harmony between glass
and nature.
A piece of nature, such as a stone, driftwood, or horn, serves as the foundation of his work, embodying the complete artwork
and revealing how the glass can merge with it. This is where the challenge begins: bringing the envisioned form to life. He
uses ordinary window glass (sometimes recycled), occasionally colored glass, and specialized colored adhesives. The
window glass is cut, bonded into a rough block, then ground and polished in several steps to achieve the desired shape. While
tools like the Kugler lathe are commonly associated with lead crystal glass, he uses this technique with window glass, an
unconventional material. The weight and shape achieved through this process offer a new interpretation of these traditional
machines. By bonding float glass with natural elements and the resulting forms, he has developed a unique artistic technique.
He studied at the Glass-HTL in Kramsach and completed the artistic advanced course for the high school diploma. During
this time he developed a deep connection with nature and glass, which inspired his dream of creating glass sculptures.
Only twenty years later, after an extended period of personal development while holding a leading position in the family business, he found the strength and courage to pursue his dream and realize his artistic vision. In the first year, invitations to exhibitions
soon followed, leading to press coverage and solo exhibitions in the years that followed.
